One of my favorite boarding school teachers/deans volunteered – out of the blue- to officiate my wedding ceremony last night. This is funny on so many levels.
This is the very same man who used to push me into bushes when I saw him on the path, or pinched my arms until they lost circulation EVERY TIME he saw me 10 years ago. The latter still happens to this day, but it’s less severe. His rationale? I was one of those kids who needed to be hemmed up or checked every so often. Truth and tabernacle! I’m glad he did it, but I’m an adult now – Can we stop with the arm pinching? Some habits die hard, huh?
Imagine my ceremony with this man officiating? I’d never make it to I Do. He’d be up there telling all of my business and cracking jokes in his casual, matter-of-fact tone. “Now friends… I don’t know how she convinced him to pull this off… (insert story about crazy 14-year-old me)… but I’m glad we’re here.” Although, now that the seed has been planted, I’m thinking this may not be such a bad idea.
There are 2 other folks I’ve considered for officiants. My “other Dad” from boarding school who was and still is the school’s minister, and my “stand-in Dad” from NYC who is also a minister and one of my late stepDad’s best friends. The first would add an air of sophistication, down-home comfort, and nostalgia with his booming voice and stories. The second? I think he’d have me in tears throughout the ceremony because he’s sure to tell a story or two about my stepDad and I’d lose it, but he too would have jokes. Either way, I’ve got some great options.
But I’m getting waaaaay ahead of myself here as no questions have been asked or answered, no ring has been exchanged, and no agreements have been made between families just yet. It is nice to think about, though. So that’s what I’ll do. Which, funny enough, is EXACTLY what the volunteer officiant told Mr and I to do last night during dinner.

Whew! I read the first sentence and freaked out for a good 5 minutes. “SHE GOT MARRIED LAST NIGHT” is the first thing that popped in my head. Then I rescanned your past blogs for something I might have missed before coming back to read the entire post, LOL.
